I was pretty surprised the first time I got an email from an incensed Bruneian objecting to this post. The fact that I didn’t remember writing it, let alone keeping it in my archives, led to a few moments of total confusion (not uncommon for me, I’ll admit). But after a little quicktime recall, I realized that I did indeed make a crack about the child labor rate in Brunei over a year ago, and thanks to the great body politic that churns in the marvel we call the internet, many residents of this Southeast Asian Sultanate have put me in my place through stern (and sometimes lengthy) emails and even a few blog posts. So here I sit, humbly corrected; for the record, I’m happy to announce that Brunei is a tranquil and harmonious place to bring up children, without any risk of their being carted off to work 16-hour days in Nike sweatshops molding the little plastic ties on the ends of sneaker laces. Thank you.
